Manager, Environmental Health & Safety

Position Title: Environmental Health & Safety Manager

Reports To: Head of Global Ops and Facilities

Job Summary: Hands-on personnel responsible for the development, implementation, and enforcement of Alta’s Environmental, Safety and Industrial Hygiene programs.

Job Duties: The Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) manager will be solely responsible for the formulation and implementation of a multifaceted program which is appropriate to Alta’s technology and equipment, and, provides the general and specific training and protection of Alta’s employees, on-site contractors, and visitors. Furthermore, the EH&S Manager will be responsible for all environmental and safety and health reports that are required by federal, state, and municipal authorities. He/she will work actively with all regulatory agencies to ensure conformance with all requirements and recordkeeping along with resolving Alta’s concerns within the regulatory framework. The EH&S Manager will work with the development, manufacturing, and facilities organizations within the company to insure that applicable safeguards and programs are in place for all existing equipment and processes. In addition, he/she will work with these teams to provide timely inputs to the equipment and process design reviews, installation and start-up of equipment and processes, and with construction activities. The EH&S Manager is responsible for chairing the weekly meeting of Alta’s Safety Committee and reporting weekly on the EH&S status to the employees.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The successful candidate understands the requirements of corporate Environmental, Health and Safety programs as mandated by federal, state, and local governments and insurance companies. Furthermore, he/she has a demonstrated expertise in environmental, health and safety regulations and related reporting requirements. The successful candidate will have a minimum of ten years of EH&S experience related to semiconductor manufacturing and/or R&D. Additional requirements include:

  • BS, preferably MS degree in chemistry or chemical engineering or environmental engineering
  • Leadership skills
  • CSP or CIH certified
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • ERT team leadership
  • Demonstrated capability to manage and implement environmental, health and safety programs for a group of
    at least 100 professionals
  • Semi Equipment Design Knowledge
  • Toxic Gas Ordinance Knowledge
  • Ability to conduct industrial hygiene sampling
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Positive attitude

Mechanical Design Engineer

Reports To: Director, MOCVD

Job Summary: Design and develop high throughput manufacturing

Job Duties: Work with Process Development Teams

  • Support tools and process development by rapid prototyping of core hardware components
  • Work with process engineers to optimize system performance and configuration
  • Work with process engineers to develop process module concepts
  • Define and validate hardware tolerances to meet process requirements
  • Generate internal documentation for the working models

Production Tool Development:

  • Work with internal team members and contract engineers to build sub modules required to define production level architecture
  • Define architecture of high throughput tools
  • Develop hardware specifications for internal and external hardware development
  • Work with internal resources and/or outsource manufacturing partners to define, design, manufacture, and validate pilot line production tools
  • Work with internal resources and/or outsource manufacturing partners to define, design, manufacture, and validate high volume manufacturing tools

Work with Production Teams:

  • Assist production teams with problem solving techniques
  • Develop strategies for production control

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. in mechanical engineering
  • Experience in rapid prototyping as well as high throughput production tool design and build
  • Demonstrated mechanical design experience along with strong team building skills
  • Strong problem solving skills along with in depth understanding of equipment development, equipment production, engineering change control, and continuous improvement
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment across multiple projects
  • Knowledge of fluid, thermal, and/or stress modeling
  • Hands-on experience in semiconductor process engineering or related fields
  • Aggressive and results driven approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to effectively communicate at various levels within the organization
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Module Assembly Process and Equipment Engineer

Reports To: Manufacturing Engineering Director

Job Summary: Responsible for all the technical and quality aspects of one or several back-end processes, including film lamination, cell separation and/or cell and matrix/module assembly and encapsulation. Support to the operations in the pilot line and to the development of new assembly processes and automated equipment.

Job Duties:

  • Develop and maintain robust processes and equipment procedures in one or more of the following process areas:

    • Film lamination
    • Cell separation, testing and binning
    • Film matrix assembly
    • PV module encapsulation
  • Determination of process windows and sensitivities
  • Team with Front-End, Back-End and Yield Engineers to identify and address process interactions
  • Establish metrology requirements for process control
  • Documentation of process and tool specifications
  • Implementation of processes for high volume manufacturing. Partner with hardware design engineers and vendors to optimize process performance
  • Support to manufacturing, process and equipment troubleshooting, documentation of operation procedures

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • M.S./Ph.D. in material science, chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or related fields
  • Hands-on experience in solar or semiconductor process engineering or related fields
  • Experience in process development and automation for PV manufacturing or similar is a plus
  • Strong problem solving and analytical capabilities
  • Aggressive and results driven approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to effectively communicate at various levels within the organization
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong data analysis skills and familiarity with statistical process control methods

Systems Engineer

Reports To: VP, Technology Development

Job Summary: Responsible for the development of a proprietary tool platform

Job Duties: The systems engineer will be responsible for the design, build, test and manufacture of a proprietary piece of equipment which is integral to the execution of Alta’s high efficiency solar module. The engineer will work with team members who are responsible for previous and subsequent processing steps to determine the specifications of the tool. The design work will include complete tool development from identification of needs, to concept design, prototyping, and final manufacturing tool design including mechanical, electrical and software. Experience and exposure to other equipment platforms related to automation, assembly and test is an advantage.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Determination of tool specification required for this particular process step
  • Design of the tool, from system and software architecture to detail drawings
  • Manage build and testing of the tool
  • Set up operation specification for the tool
  • Total ownership of manufacturing tool platform
  • Input and support of the design and automation of the Alta manufacturing line

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The successful candidate understands tool and system design and is capable of building a piece of equipment from scratch. The candidate will have at least 1 year experience in integration and design of equipment and automation.

Additional requirements include:

  • Advanced degree in EE, ME, or Engineering
  • Deep expertise with system design and integration
  • Technical expertise in designing automation and software for handling high precision processes
  • Experience in both development and manufacturing environments

Lamination and Adhesives Process Engineer

Job Summary: Responsible for all the technical and quality aspects of one or several manufacturing processes, including film conversion, film lamination and/or cell and matrix/module assembly and encapsulation. Support to the operations in the pilot line and to the development of new materials, manufacturing processes and automated equipment.

Job Duties:

  • Develop and maintain robust processes and equipment procedures in one or more of the following process areas:
    • Polymer and adhesive films conversion
    • Film lamination
    • Film matrix assembly
    • PV module encapsulation
  • Select, develop and optimize materials for PV manufacturing
  • Determination of process windows and sensitivities, optimization of process and material performance. Establish metrology requirements for statistical process control
  • Documentation of process and tool specifications
  • Implementation of processes for high volume manufacturing. Partner with hardware design engineers and vendors to optimize process performance
  • Support to manufacturing, process and equipment troubleshooting, documentation of operation procedures

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • M.S./Ph.D. in material science, chemistry, chemical engineering or related fields
  • 5+ years of experience in semiconductor packaging, printed circuits, electronics, PV or related fields
  • Experiences in flexible circuits, polymer thick film, and thin film conversions and laminates are desirable
  • Strong problem solving and analytical capabilities. Aggressive and results driven approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to effectively communicate at various levels within the organization
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong data analysis skills and familiarity with statistical process control methods
